Valencay 2016 Commemoration

The Commanding Officer and 4 members of the Corps travelled to Valençay in France to attend the Commemorative event on the 6th May. The CO laid a wreath on behalf of the Corps.

A remembrance service is held on this date every year, but this year was special as the event was marking the 75th anniversary of the landing of Georges Bégué, the first Special Operations Executive agent to parachute into France in 1941. He landed just outside the small town of Valençay and was met and assisted by Max Hymans, who put him in touch with the local resistance group in the town. The SOE memorial was unveiled in 1991 in the presence of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.

One of the highlights of the visit was meeting up with Helen, twin sister of Lilian Rolfe. She laid a wreath of fresh flowers in memory of her sister who was executed by the Nazis in Ravensbruck in January 1945.
