Reflecting on Remembrance this year, we are sharing thoughts from FANYs on why they joined the Corps, and why it was important to them to take part in these events.
Today we are sharing Shantee Dodah’s thoughts, who supported The Lady Mayor's Show. She joined the FANY in 2019 and in 2014 and is currently in the role of Deputy Recruits Officer. She is a Civil Servant.
"Today celebrates the delivery of the 697th Lord Mayor of London Dame Susan Langley DBE. She is only the third woman to hold the post in over 800 years and the first ever to be titled the ‘Lady Mayor of London’. Over 50 members took part today representing our heritage from our formation in 1907 to the modern day.
"I have supported this event every year since joining the Corps and it is the highlight of my year. I love the celebratory nature of the event made special by the crowds being so supportive and engaging. It is lovely to see people of all ages enjoying the pageantry of the occasion.
"I found out about the FANY through a work colleague who said ‘you would be good as this’. That evening I looked at the Corps’ website and instantly knew that this is where I need to be. Without hesitation, I selected ‘apply’. What attracted me to the FANY was that the FANY’s values were similar to my own, the impressive heritage and the difference members makes to others through selfless service. I have now been a member for 11 years.
"I have had the privilege to take part in a variety of support opportunities. The ones that stand out for me are the King’s Coronation, First World War Centenary in Ypres and more recently, VE 80."
