Reflecting on Remembrance this year, we are sharing thoughts from FANYs on why they joined the Corps, and why it was important to them to take part in these events.
Today we are sharing Charlotte Field’s thoughts, who supported The Field of Remembrance. Clare joined the FANY in 2019 and has been the Corps Quartermaster.
"As part of this year’s Remembrance events, I was one of the FANY representatives at the Field of Remembrance in the grounds of Westminster Abbey. Every November since 1928 The Poppy Factory have been planting poppies on wooden crosses - starting from only a handful, now in their thousands - to commemorate those service personnel who have lost their lives. This year, opened by Her Majesty the Queen, the event was a moving reminder of the sacrifice so many have made to ensure our future.
"My Aunt has been in the Corps for 12 years and she encouraged me to join. I took the leap 7 years ago and it’s one of the best things I have ever done. Working in a very male dominated office at the time, it was a pleasure to become part of a group of capable and generous women from such a range of backgrounds. For me, knowing that the FANY are volunteers and yet at a moments notice you have up to 150 women willing to put in their all, makes the whole organisation even more special.
"The summer of 2022 and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee has been my most surreal FANY experience so far. To be able to be part of the fun, excitement, and celebration whilst providing support to units that had worked so hard to make the events unforgettable, I have never felt prouder to put on this uniform.
"The Corps has given me the most incredible opportunities and I have made the best of friends, so I hope I have many years ahead where I can continue to give back and serve in the footsteps of exceptional women."
