Celebrating International Women’s Day

To celebrate International Women’s Day this year, we are reflecting on and remembering the remarkable women who are part of the Corps – past and present – and celebrating the amount of time and energy they all volunteer to ensure that we can provide a wide range of support to civil and military authorities 24 hours a day 7 days a week when required.

The Corps is made up of 150 female volunteers who have given over 2,500 days of support to over 40 organisations in the past three years.

Our support can be broken down into three key areas:

1. Emergency Response,

2. Resilience and role playing, and

3. ceremonial and commemorative.

Our active members train throughout the year to undertake support, to build esprit de corps, and to develop leadership and teamwork skills, which can be transferred back to the workplace.

As well as celebrating all of our amazing active members, we remember all FANYs who served before us. The Corps has a long and celebrated history of incredible women who have provided support to a huge range of agencies – and throughout WWI and WWII – since our inception in 1907 and you can read more about our history here.

We also remember long-serving member Laura Lean, who died in September. Laura was a member of the Corps for many years and held several roles within the FANY including Training Officer and Communications Officer, and Parachuting Officer. Laura was remembered in The Daily Telegraph (Tuesday 5 December 2023), which can be read in full here. In July 2023, on her last public outing, she was awarded the Order of the League of Mercy in recognition of her outstanding leadership and commitment to the Corps. Laura remained a full serving member of the Corps and was an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

Thank you to all of our inspiring members – past and present – we are very proud of all of the support that we are able to provide and hope to continue to be able to provide support whenever we are needed in future.
