Eight FANYs recently took part in Ex Snow Fox XV, the annual Yeomanry ski exercise. This year, 90 participants from 6 Yeomanry units spent a week skiing together in Kitzbuhel.
The town was very lively on arrival as thousands of visitors created a festival atmosphere for the men's downhill race weekend on the famous Hahnenkamm run. Skiing on the rest of the mountain was far less furious and serious as we got our 'ski legs' back again on the first day, and then took 3 days of ski school lessons / guiding, before the inter-regiment competitions.
Conditions for the ski orienteering competition were described as 'adventurous' as the blizzards caused many of the lifts to shut, further testing the initiative of the competing teams to reach all 10 set points on the mountains within a set timescale. The weather lifted in the afternoon, and the FANY team came 2nd. On the following day, FANYs achieved first, second and third places in the military ladies individual slalom race competition.
The Exercise is a fantastic annual opportunity for all Yeomanry units to meet and compete in good spirit, and to catch up with good friends made in past years. This year, we were honoured that Major General The Duke of Westminster, President of the Yeomanry Ski Association visited us on the Exercise.
